I work as a nurse inside a hospital, where there are numerous chemical, biological radiological and ergonomic issues. A few examples include anesthetic gases, chemical cleaners, disinfectants, sterilizers and radiation exposure. Certain chemical exposures such as anesthetic gases can cause reproductive and neurological issues for those who have chronic exposure. According to the industrial hygiene hierarchy of controls, these issues should be eliminated, substituted or isolated. If the hazard cannot be eliminated, such as anesthetic gases that are crucial to the patient's treatment process, then safer gases should be considered. However, this is not a feasible possibility. In reality, the best option for available to most healthcare workers is through personal protective equipment (PPE).
However, many workers aren't even aware of the hazardous effects of many of these chemical, biological and radiological issues. Although most are cautious of the radiological hazards, common substances such as anesthesia and hospital cleaners aren't even considered to be a risk. Education is a big factor that could help protect workers more in the workplace. Moreover, stricter protocols should be in place to preclude illnesses caused by unnecessary exposures. For example, greater PPE should be provided to healthcare workers who are exposed to anesthetic gases for long periods of time. Workers should be knowledgeable enough about their environment to advocate for themselves in their workplace.
