M4.6 Radon

I was surprised to learn the alarmingly high mortality rate from lung cancer secondary to radon. I did not know that radon was the second leading cause, and that we need to even be responsible for monitoring the levels. The simple steps suggest utilizing test kits every few years and using radon professionals if needed. A national awareness campaign should be developed to help educate the community of the simple steps needed to ensure safe homes. This information should also be included for new homeowners and property managers, to ensure all individuals are safe. Dr. Akerlely presents the information as 3 easy steps, and a catchy slogan and mission statement should be simple to deliver the information to the community clearly and concisely. Potential collaborators could include homeowners associations, regional EPA offices for radon testing kits and even primary care providers who can help inform their patients on the risks for lunch cancer.

  1. I was also surprised to find that radon was the second leading cause of lung cancer. This statistic really bring home the need for more effective public campaigns supporting home radon testing. Think it would fantastic if primary care providers were involved in the education and could survey their patients as part of an environmental safety screen.
